According to this TechCrunch story, 30 GB Zunes around the world began failing last night at 2AM. There is a punchline in here somewhere but I’m glad this isn’t something Apple is facing. The market and users are very tolerant of terrible Microsoft product reliabilty. You need only to look as far as the Xbox Red Ring of Death issue or the long standing virus issues with Windows to see other examples of poor quality control.

My husband and roommate both work at Microsoft and we are all laughing and crying at the same time. Hoping this doesn’t signal the death of Zune and the plunging of an already terrible stock price! There may some people who just want their money back to go by an ipod!Maybe it could be tied to a code problem from some low paid Indian engineer and Microsoft will finally pull out of India and bring jobs back to the US,but I doubt it. I would prefer a larger Zune replacement anyway.

Hi Betsy,
Thanks for stopping by my blog.
I’m sure the Zune crash of ‘08 is just a software bug but very embarrasing indeed. I doubt this has anything to do with onshore versus offshore work. After all, MSN has long been plagued with the blue screen of death - this is just the mobile version of it.
Hang in there, I’m sure better Zunes are coming - eventually…
